The other day we were driving and D says to Andrew and me, "I don't like it that Charlotte is taller than me." She said it with such sadness it broke our hearts. We were torn between making it seem like it wasn't a big deal ("Who cares?" ) and showing empathy ("Sometimes I don't like it that Daddy is taller than me.") I decided that empathy was more important and went with that, but I also tried to point out that while C might be taller, D might have other strengths. ("Daddy is taller than me, but I can run farther than Daddy.")
Still, it made me sad, in part because I know it is just the first of many such conversations we will have with the two of them.
