Yesterday morning I took C/D to a short trip to the Discovery Museum. The museum includes an outdoor area that has a boat on it. The boat is really too small for parents to get in so you have to kind of stand on the outside and watch. D and C were inside and D was steering. There was a group of school kids there and, quite honestly, I thought the kids were poorly behaved and the chaperones relatively unconcerned. A boy from the group came up and grabbed the wheel. He was at least twice D's age (I'm guessing 5ish) and easily 15 inches taller than her. D didn't budge. She held on tight, looked way up at the kid, and yelled at him. She didn't bite or push or do anything aggressive, she just held on for dear life and started yelling at the top of her lungs. This went on for several MINUTES, with the kid looking a little bewildered that this pixie wasn't quietly acquiescing to his demands. Finally he started yanking the wheel really hard, hoping to get it out of her grasp, and still she held her ground.
When my pleas to take turns didn't go anywhere, and the woman watching the kid did NOTHING (is it wrong to think you should ask a 5 year old to let a little tiny girl have a turn first, especially when she was there first?), I finally crawled in and yanked D out of the situation. (Is it bad that I was a teensy bit proud of her?) As I walked away holding her I said "Miss D you are one tough cookie" mostly to myself. And from little Miss D's mouth came a "one tough cookie" echo.
My Miss D. Give her some "snickers" and she might be a contender for Hands on a Hard Body.
And for those of you ex-Trilogians who read this, I ran into Tom Mar..., er uh, Kramer there. All I could think when I saw him across the room was "OMG, I'm blanking on the name, but you're the guy who passed out on the bathroom floor of Sugars."
