Uncool

C and D went to a swim and tennis camp this week.  It was their first experience with tennis and they seemed to like it.  They didn't love the camp however, in part because they didn't seem to love the counselors.

Yesterday D came home from camp really sad and she told me that "Coco made fun of me for wearing Sponge Bob Square pants boys underwear."  She was really sad, and even sadder that apparently C had laughed when the girl laughed at D (while sad, kind of typical for a 5 year old in a scary new situation).

So this afternoon we went to get new underwear.  We had to go to several places because most of them only had pink underwear and D refused. She did still buy one pair of boys but she seemed happy with her new choices.

But it felt a bit like the end of an era, and the beginning of the rest of her life.

P.S.  I did find out later that one of the boys from her class at school, also at camp, and the son of a Stanford sorority sister of mine, who is pretty "typical boy" and not the kid you might expect to do this, actually stuck up for D and said "She's my friend and it doesn't matter if she wants to wear boys underwear."  Apparently school is thicker than gender : )
